Like hand-knotted rugs, hand-tufted pieces are woven by hand, but the process is much simpler and less time-consuming. To make a hand-tufted rug, once the design is ready, the canvas is set up on a frame. The weaver then begins firing the strands of wool – or cotton – through the canvas with a hand-operated tufting gun and thus creating the pile on the other side of the canvas. Next, by gluing a scrim onto the base, the fibers are solidified. Finally, a fringe is sewed or sometimes glued on to the rug.
